This large (it was about 5cm long) and crazily coloured Indian grasshopper is a Poekilocerus pictus (painted grasshopper), or aak grasshopper. Apparently, nymphs of the species are known for squirting a jet of liquid up to several inches away when picked up.
My favourite part of this photograph is not the grasshopper itself, but the red sneakers, yellow leggings and pink skirt of the little girl that I photographed inadvertently. You rock little girl!
The only translation of aak I can find online is alive and kicking’, which seems appropriate! Can any Hindi speakers tell me if this is correct?
