This yellow wall, that a local man canoed me past, is being reflected in the calm, green waters of a canal in the south of India. I mention the band Coldplay in my title because they’re in India right now, and as you probably know they have a song called ‘Yellow’. There was a lot of buzz about Coldplay and India earlier in the year when they released the video for their song ‘Hymn For the Weekend’, which was filmed in India. At the time I read many discussions online about cultural appropriation and whether or not the video was essentially just a big bunch of cliches about India, but it’s not my purpose to discuss that here. I did wonder, though, why Beyonce (love her as I do!) was cast as the Bollywood star when there are so many Indian actresses, both talented and absolutely gorgeous to look at, that could have been cast – Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Aishwariya Rai are perhaps the most famous to mention here. There is an Indian actress in it, Sonam Kapoor (whom I just happened to see in the flesh at this year’s Indian Film Festival in Melbourne!), but she’s not given a lot to do.
