This sea of yellow is plastic – hand-sorted from local rubbish dumps by people working as waste collectors, hoping to sell it on to local plastic recycling companies. On the same strip of road I saw areas of red and blue plastic, also sorted into their respective colours. Millions of tonnes of plastic are collected, sorted and sold-on for recycling in India every year this way. As you know I’m a visual person, so maybe, if I was a plastic collector, I would find pleasure in the collection of a singular colour?
