Mystery squares

What’s this?

I was intrigued by these square engravings that I saw all around the incredible temple ruins of the ancient and ruined city of Vijayanagara. Strewn with enormous granite rocks that seems to rise out of nowhere, Vijayanagara is an unworldly and truly special place with an incredible natural energy that I’ve never experienced anywhere else.

I don’t know what these engravings are, or what they mean. Does anybody know?

Where’s this?

Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located within the ruins of Vijayanagara, Karnataka. During its prime, at around 1500 AD, about half a million people lived in Vijayanagara, and it was one of the richest and cities in the world. Hampi is still an important religious centre today.
